PREPARATION & PLANNING

In my experience, planning permission is not the insurmountable barrier to progress that many present.  In fact our experience with earthship projects has been positive.  Individual planners and planning authorities have supported the professional approaches we have made – yes do things in a different way, but with motives that have a clear vision for a viable future…

at the end of the day, we simply propose building homes that don’t cause climate change because they work with nature to create all their own heat and hotwater…

The Groundhouse was exceptional in planning terms.  We had a situation where it was not possible to build on the land, and yet everyone who came across the detail of the application we wanted to make was keen to see it happen.  It took a year for planning permission to come, and for the merits of earthship design to prove the exception to the rule.

Gathering the up-cycled materials we needed was a big challenge.  We had to source over a 1000 van tyres and these needed to be of the right size.  Not that there is a shortage of this key material, but as a waste stream it is controlled and regulated.
