Eco materials
Design aims: groundhouse is built from local, natural, traditional and salvaged materials as well as state of the art new products with recycled content and low ecological impact
- products with recycled content include the ultra high performance foamglas which contains around 80% recycled windscreen glass, non itch roof insulation made from recycled plastic bottles and ecomembrane damp proof membrane made from recycled plastic bale bags
- natural materials such as sheep’s wool insulation are also used
- the rammed earth formers for the heavy structural external walls include the use of 1000 salvaged tyres, while the wooden framing throughout the house includes a high percent of top quality salvaged wood
- several hundred glass bottles and around 250 kilos of cardboard are also used
- the design makes use of over 150 tonnes of rammed earth from the site as well as sandy subsoil for the earth cement floors
- granite stones from ruins on theĀ site where incorporated into tradtional breton outside walls
- 4 tonnes of salvaged limestone slabs are incorporated into interior floors and exterior terraces
